Board Evaluations
The boards of all organisations are increasingly examining the way they
discharge their duties and their overall performance to achieve continuous
improvement. A rigorous external assessment undertaken on a periodic basis is
a valuable tool in achieving overall improvement.
A board that conducts periodic assessments/evaluations is more likely to
anticipate problems, therefore being prepared to deal with these more
effectively. The evaluation process can highlight specific areas for action and
development. Board evaluations can help members develop an appreciation of
each other’s diverse skills and, consequently, those of the overall board. This
can prove invaluable when seeking new or additional board members to ensure
you get the right skill set for the organisation.
Unfortunately some boards do not operate efficiently or effectively, a board
evaluation can be a useful tool to break this cycle and identify appropriate
remedies.
Essentially an effective board evaluation can improve the overall effectiveness
of meetings, improve the relationship between the board and management,
identify areas for improvement and build relationships between directors.
